The best AI watermark removers in 2026, compared honestly

The clearest way to sort these tools is by one question: does your file leave your computer? Of the six compared here, three process in your browser and three upload to a server. That single difference drives most of the others, including why the server-based ones cap you at a few images a day and the browser-based ones mostly do not. Facts below were captured on 31 July 2026 and are re-checked quarterly, because pricing and limits in this category change often.

What this comparison does not do

There are no scores, stars or rankings here, and no claim that we ran a bake-off. Several tools in this category display testimonial carousels and aggregate ratings that would be difficult to source. Inventing our own would make this page worth less than the table it contains.

MarkWipe is in the table with its own limits written in the same column as everyone else's, including the ones that do not flatter it.

Tool Processing Free limits Output Scope and caveats
MarkWipe In your browser None Lossless PNG Small fixed marks only. Images today, video in development.
watermarkremover.io Server upload Freemium, paid annual plans Not verified Auto-detection, no manual brush. Batch is premium-only.
unwatermark.ai Server upload Credit system with a free allowance Not verified Auto-detect plus manual brush, separate batch tool.
dewatermark.ai Server upload 3 images/day free, 10MB and 6000px caps Not verified Auto-detect tiers, manual brush, 50-image batch.
localremove.com In your browser 3 free removals per day Not verified Images only.
unmarker.it In your browser Up to 40MP Always lossy JPEG Invisible and AI-signal watermarks rather than logo removal.

Why "we delete your file after download" is a weaker promise than it sounds

Upload-based tools generally handle privacy with a retention policy: your file goes to their server, gets processed, and is deleted afterwards. That can be perfectly true and still leaves you trusting a claim you cannot check, about a machine you cannot see, run by a company whose policy can change.

An in-browser tool makes a different kind of statement, because it is testable. Open your browser's Network tab, use the tool, and watch what happens. If the file never appears in a request, no retention policy is needed. That test takes about thirty seconds and works on any tool in this table, including ours.

One observation from the 31 July 2026 capture is worth recording precisely: dewatermark.ai's own FAQ answers the question "Can I remove a watermark without Photoshop?" by saying it "runs entirely in your browser", while the product operates an upload pipeline with server-side deletion promises. We note it as a dated observation rather than an accusation, and it is the reason we suggest checking the Network tab rather than the marketing copy.

Why the browser-based tools still differ enormously

Running locally is a starting condition rather than a finished product, and the three client-side tools here do different jobs.

localremove.com processes on-device and then caps you at three free removals a day. That cap protects no server cost, since the work happened on your machine, which makes it a pricing decision rather than a technical one. unmarker.it is aimed at invisible and AI-signal watermarks rather than removing a visible logo, and its output is always JPEG, so every export loses some quality across the whole image. MarkWipe targets visible fixed marks and exports lossless PNG, with no cap.

Where MarkWipe is the wrong choice

If your watermark moves position through a video, this is not your tool. Sora's username stamp is the common case, and we ship no preset for it rather than one that would cover half the mark.

If the mark is tiled across the whole frame, or large enough that filling it means inventing a subject rather than continuing a background, that is also outside what this does. And if you need the video file itself cleaned today, video support is still in development, so right now you would be working on an exported frame.

How to test any of these on your own file

  • Open your browser's developer tools and switch to the Network tab before you start.
  • Use the tool on a real file you own and watch whether it is sent anywhere.
  • Check the export format. If it is JPEG only, the whole image is re-encoded.
  • Zoom into the patched area at full size rather than judging it from a preview.
  • Try a hard case, not the easiest photo you have.
Run that test on MarkWipe

Opens the tool. Watch the Network tab while you use it; the engine downloads once and your image never appears in a request.

Use MarkWipe only on media you created or have the rights to edit. Read the acceptable-use terms

Questions about choosing a watermark remover

Can I remove watermarks from AI-generated images?
Yes, if the generator stamps a small badge that stays in one place, which most of them do. Gemini, Ideogram, Kling, Hailuo, Vidu, Luma, Pika and Higgsfield all mark output that way. Sora is the notable exception, because part of its stamp moves position across the video.
Which watermark remover does not upload my files?
As of the July 2026 capture, MarkWipe, localremove.com and unmarker.it all process in the browser, though they do very different jobs and have different limits. The way to check any tool for yourself is to open your browser's Network tab and watch whether your file leaves the machine.
Is a free watermark remover worse than a paid one?
Not necessarily, because the cost structures differ. A tool that runs on a server pays for every image you process, so caps and paid tiers follow naturally. A tool that runs in your browser costs its operator nothing per image, so there is nothing for a cap to protect.
Does removing a watermark reduce image quality?
It depends on the export format. MarkWipe defaults to PNG, which is lossless, and only rewrites the area you marked. A tool that re-encodes to JPEG will lose some quality across the whole image regardless of how small the edit was.
What can none of these tools do well?
Watermarks that move between positions, patterns tiled across the whole frame, and marks sitting over detailed subjects where the fill has to invent structure rather than continue it. Any tool promising all three deserves a sceptical test on your own file before you rely on it.
